#RIGA_IFF_EXPO: In Search of Cinemas Lost

Zigmārs Jauja is an architect, a photographer, a researcher and damn good storyteller. The festival team approached him with a proposal to do a physical exhibition of his research into the small cinema tradition of Riga city after he published an illustrated article in the Latvian bookazine Benji Knewman.

#BRODSKY_RIGA: Дети Иосифа

The screening of the documentary by Ekaterina Gordeeva at Splendid Palace downstairs cafe is an event of great significance due to it’s timing – it seems the city is on a Brodsky craze – this same date marks the premiere of a long-awaited collaboration between the Latvian theatre grand Alvis Hermanis and Mikhail Baryshnikov at The New Riga Theatre entitled “Brodsky/Baryshnikov”.

KIDS WEEKEND: brunch for the whole family + animation workshops for kids

Sockie, Mitten, Pillow and Hankie live in the world of animation. How they got there, you will find out during the Shammies animation workshop that will take place on Saturday, October 17th. Meanwhile, on Sunday, October 18th, inspired by the Norwegian animation “Morningbird and Murmelton on Winter Holiday”, everyone will be able to try out their hand at actually making a real animation film.

Swedish crime fiction expert Kerstin Bergman talks about what Nordic Noir is, what distinguishes it from other crime fiction, and why it has become so popular all over the world. She also talks about the characteristic features of the crime fiction traditions from the different Nordic countries and presents some of the most current trends of Nordic Noir.

Panel discussion “Student Film and Festival” is organised in frames of SHORT RIGA Baltic Student Film Competition and aims to gather the festival jury, participants of SHORT RIGA Baltic Student, International and Music video competitions, film school students, graduates and everyone interested in filmmaking to talk about perspective of short film genre and the role of international festivals in filmmakers’ career. Specific focus will be on student short film festival distribution, curating and programming for short film festivals, festival circuit and networking.
